Alkali Kicks-off Last Quarter
The last quarter segment of the Abuja Writers’ Forum’s Guest Writer Session kicks-off on September 26, with an emerging writer from the North Eastern part of Nigeria, Fatima-Ba’aram Alkali. Author of the debut novel, Personal Angle, Ms Alkali who describes writing as a hobby, is currently a law lecturer at the University of Abuja
She is the daughter o#CC3366f Zaynab Alkali, a renowned novelist from Northern Nigeria and a deputy vice chancellor at the Nassarawa State University. Her father is Muhammad Nur Alkali, a Professor of history.
Born in the 70s in Maiduguri, Borno State, Ms Alkali had her primary education at the University of Maiduguri Primary School and the Staff School of the Modibbo Adama College, Yola. She had her secondary education at the Federal Government Girls College, |

Yola and the Federal Government College, Maiduguri. She obtained an Upper Class Law degree from University of Maiduguri in 1997 and was called to the Bar in 1999 with an Upper Class Certificate from the Nigerian Law School. She obtained a Masters degree in law from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where she is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in law.
Ms Alkali also writes poetry and some of her poems have been published in two anthologies, Secrets of Silence and Vultures in the Air. Her debut novel, Personal Angle , which was published in 2008 explores the tension of upholding moral principles.
The Guest Writer Session, an initiative of the Abuja Writers’ Forum (AWF) is a monthly event which takes place on the last Saturday of the month by 4pm at the Pen and Pages Bookstore, White House Plaza, Plot 79, Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja. It also features performance poetry, mini visual arts exhibition and live music.
The event is preceded by a creative writing workshop in the morning of the same day and the September edition will feature Zubairu Attah as the facilitator, and he will be sharing on play writing principles. The workshop holds at the Banquet Hall of Top Rank Hotel, Area 11, Garki, Abuja by 11 am.
The other writers billed for the last quarter include Victoria Kankara and John Pepper Clark Bekederemo. Ms Kankara shot into literary prominence four years ago with her debut poetry collection, Hymns and Hymens, which got on the NLNG Literary Prize long list for 2005. Professor Clark-Bekederemo has published six poetry collections and is also an established playwright famous for The Ozidi Saga. After retiring from the University of Lagos in 1980, he founded the Pec Repertory Theatre.
